High School of the Dead
As action packed as it was ecchi, High School of the Dead grabbed me from the very first episode and would not let me go until the very end. High School of the Dead revolved around a world that has been subjected to a nasty worldwide outbreak of zombies, and it has fallen upon a group of Japanese high school students to defend themselves against the hordes of the undead.
Action was the dominating theme with this anime, and boy was there a lot of action. You zombie fans out there will not be disappointed I can assure you. Skull smashing, baseball bat crunching, gun blasting, fist pounding, madness was not an uncommon sight. Mixed in with enough panty and breast shots to make a horny school boy blush and you have a volatile recipe for success.
As the young teens come to terms with their desperate situation, romance sparks between several of the characters. I have always been a fan of romance, so the romantic aspects of High School of the Dead caught my attention especially, and made the show much more watchable (though the show was super watchable to begin with).
The character development was well done, though I’ve seen better. I also enjoyed the dramatic aspect of the anime. The drama mainly revolved around the ever fluctuating heart of the main male protagonist as he seemed to hop from one girl to the next. Oh, plus the group’s ever expanding quest to fend off the endless undead hordes. That was pretty dramatic.
I rather enjoyed the art work. The heavy shading definitely highlighted the beautiful visuals. High School of the Dead had a professional feel that impressed me to no end. You could definitely tell that this anime was produced by an animation studio that had a bit of a budget. The music was fine, but you’ll find that it wasn’t the music that made this anime memorable.
In the end, almost every aspect of this anime impressed me. I really can’t say much about the story line. Really, the entire anime consisted of the teens running for their lives the whole time (I’m saying that like it’s a bad thing). Because of the lack of significant back story, the character development suffered slightly, but in the overall scheme of things, I found that I did not mind in the least. That was how awesome this anime was. I’m giving High School of the Dead 8 out of 10. Allow me one last word if you will: watch the OVA, you’ll resent yourself if you don’t.
